The 'Real Life' project encompasses conceptualizing, designing and building five thousand (5000) emergency shelter units to provide temporary housing solutions to assist disaster affected individuals (particularly those from the lower socioeconomic fraction of the Jamaican society). The project also includes the training of individuals/volunteers to respond and assist in the distribution and setup of the relief housing solutions in the event of a disaster. In the aftermath of the disaster training will also be conducted in affected communities to assist individuals in obtaining gainful sources of income so they will be able to regain self-sufficiency and contribute to the redevelopment of the impacted community.

These units may be assembled to shelter displaced families for up to three (3) months, and can then be disassembled for storage and future re-use. This project deliverable will be accompanied by training in assembly and maintenance of the units for Red Cross staff and volunteers. Sixty (60) residents from three (3) vulnerable communities will also be trained in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and income generation in an effort to build their resilience in the face of future disasters. The total project budget is US$1.45 million (with an additional US$1 million in in-kind contribution from another IDB partner that is not under RE-Life’s management). The project will be completed in 8 months (January – August 2014).
